‘Maria del Camino’ Art Car

The art car MARIA DEL CAMINO returns for her fabulous seventh visit to Black Rock City. MARIA DEL CAMINO began with a 1959 El Camino and the unfulfilled promise of the flying car.

With help of many friends, over the course of many years, she was drilled with tens of thousands of holes, making what was left of the body more ephemeral and creating a pixelated image of the False Maria/Machine Man from the film Metropolis by Fritz Lang.

She is mounted to a hydraulic tracked excavator and crawls along at a spectacular 2 mph. We are thrilled with her latest evolution from diesel to an electric motor and her creator Bruce Tomb will now be offering DRIVING LESSONS to those lucky playa denizens who crave the thrill of controlling 3 tons of lumbering luxury.

Students will learn about hydraulics, how to safely operate skid-steer, perform basic gymnastics, fly in slow motion high above the earth with friends, create a spectacle, do playa donuts, draw on the earth, lay rubber, ghost ride the whip, drive remotely via smart phone, and prepare yourself for the next generation of driverless cars!
